20 months is a fun age!

On a recent fun day trip to Questacon - the National Science & Technology Centre. This was in the "Mini-Q" area for 0-6 year olds.

We've been really enjoying Mia in her toddler years (so far!!). Sure, there is the occasional tantrum or restless sleep here and there, but overall it's been a time of pure wonder at how quickly her abilities have grown, immense satisfaction in watching her pick up on things we're teaching her, and lots and lots of laughter.

Here's a snapshot of what my little 20-month-older is up to lately:

Most used words: No, no way, Dora, cuddle, water, Mummy, Daddy

New words she's learnt recently: Good, shut up (which comes out as "Ub up!" combined with a face palm), high five, ice cream, bathroom, wee-wee

Favourite past-times: Watching Dora, exploring the outdoors, drawing on her etch-a-sketch/chalkboard/colouring-in book, reading books

Busy busy busy

Favourite songs to dance to: "Moves like Jagger" by Maroon 5/Christina Aguilera, "Pumped up kicks" by Foster the People, "I love it" by Hilltop Hoods/Sia

Favourite foods: Banana, dried apricots, chicken, beans, toast, custard

Stuff she knows a lot about already: Animals and the noises they make, parts of the human body, how to describe the weather, numbers between 1 and 10 (but not in order), how to unlock my phone or find the "emergency call" button when it's still locked and then punch in "000"

Things about Mia that I still don't understand: Why she will say "no" to almost everything including things that she actually does want, why even though she picks up words really easily, she still can't say "milk" which seems to me to be quite a simple one to say, why despite our best efforts something will always happen daily at around the 6pm mark to turn her in to a demon

New challenges that we'll be facing as parents in 2012: Potty training, possibly converting Mia's cot in to a toddler bed if she gets climbey enough, a 2nd birthday party

Taking after her mother

  1. Ahhh lovely post. It's nice to record the little things like that to look back on. My son is similar with a word he won't/can't say - he's always said 'peppie' for 'penguin' and still at 2.5 always says 'peppie'! No is also a firm favourite.
As for beds and toilet training - I've been posting about that on my blog this week. Oh the joys!

  2. LOL that she knows how to use your phone, so sneaky! I love that age, it's my favourite. They say the two's are terrible but it's not necessarily that bad with every child. For eg, we had a really good run with Bub at that age and now she's almost 4 and has suddenly decided that tantrums twice daily are a necessity! You should do this every few months, it will be nice to look back on :) Is work any better?

  3. Thanks Anna, I do like to read back over these kinds of posts from time to time, and maybe one day Mia will read them herself! It's funny how "no" seems to be a more popular word at this age than "yes"?
I'm always so behind on my blog reader, it takes me ages to catch up to what everyone's been posting. I'll have to get on to it so I can read your posts!

  4. Oh no Lisa, don't make me scared of the 4-year age! Lol. We have lots of tantrums over here, but backing on to those are moments of giddy happiness, she seems to always be at one extreme or the other!
That's my intention actually, to reflect on her at various ages more regularly, which may be boring for others to read but saves a nice little time capsule for me :)
Not really feeling much better to be honest, you? Much soul searching happening, and I feel like I'm getting closer to a possible solution. I think I said it before as a comment on one of your posts, but you should join Twitter, we could chat about it in real time and keep each other motivated!

  5. Hmm I will look into Twitter - I'm a bit intimidated by it, but I'm sure once I know how to use it I will be fine!

Not feeling much better and I don't feel any closer to a solution - I wish I knew what I wanted to do, that would make life a lot easier!

  7. Lisa - I was intimidated by it at first too! I found the best thing to do was to sign up, and just observe for a while to see how it all works. The Twitter help pages were also really clear and gave me a good idea of what all the lingo meant! Sorry to hear you're not feeling any better, it sounds like you need that holiday! Hopefully your head will feel a lot clearer once you've had a break.

Megan - thanks, yes it's pretty amazing to watch them become real little people! You'll have to let me know what you think about Passion, I think I'll give it a chance but I have so many other things I want to read first!
